Departmental Newsletter, Volume 2, Number 1

Greetings!                                                      November 1 , 2005

Fall is in the air—we’ve had our first snow and cool temps are on us “for keeps.” Time not only to break out the stocking caps and mitts, but to look forward to Spring semester plans! [Now, is that a positive attitude, or what!]

This issue of our Newsletter is devoted for the most part to class Scheduling. We also give some time and space to AMA chapter activities, important dates, and use of the Page Lab and Break-out Rooms.

NOTE: Registration begins on Monday, November 7th. Please go online to obtain the time slot available to you. Call Marilyn Wocken in Advisement to make an appointment, 777-2975. To access the Spring Schedule, go to (http://www.und.edu) and then under “Quick Links” choose Spring 06 Class Schedule.

We are pleased to be able to offer such breadth in courses, particularly electives, in the Spring.

Please Be Aware:  the Department anticipates some difficulty in fully staffing electives for Fall, 2006, and Spring, 2007.  If you are in a position to “juggle” your elective/required course dates, you might want to consider an elective for Spring, 2006, or the 311 elective for Summer, 2006.

Summer, 2006

Registration for Summer 2006 won’t take place until some time in April.  However, we’d like to facilitate your planning by giving you an early look at what we plan to offer this coming summer. While not 100% sure, these are a pretty good bet to be offered:

305 Marketing Foundations 1st Session
10 AM-12 Noon
MTWR Gamble 150
311 Personal Selling 2nd Session
10 AM-12 Noon
MTWR Gamble 150
396 Directed Studies ARRANGE See Dr. Lesch
397 Coop: Marketing ARRANGE Dr. Askim-Lovseth
397 Coop: Sports Business ARRANGE Dr. Nelson
497 Internship: Marketing ARRANGE Dr. Askim-Lovseth
497 Internship: Sports Business ARRANGE Dr. Nelson
592 Grad Research ARRANGE See Dr. Lesch
595 Grad Readings ARRANGE See Dr. Lesch

Before attempting to enroll, please check your plan of study and the University catalog to be sure that you’ve completed the necessary pre-requisites.

Would you like to talk over your Spring or Summer internship possibilities? Check with Academic Advisement at 777-2975.  Dr. Askim-Lovseth can be reached at 777-2930, while Dr. Nelson can be found at 777-4213.  This might be the time to snag a great practical experience!  A little planning could help make it a reality.

Additional Dates to Remember

Winter graduation will be Friday, December 16th at the Chester Fritz Auditorium.  The time for application for this date of graduation was September 20th, now passed.  A reception is being planned either for the Chester Fritz, or as has been customary, Gamble Hall.  Check with Advisement as this date approaches for all details.

The deadline to apply for May, 2006 graduation is February 7th, 2006.  Applications are available in the Office of Academic Advisement - Gamble 127.  Spring graduation will be held in the Alerus on May 13th.

Summer, 2006 graduation will be held on August 4th.  A date for application for the ceremony has not yet been set.  Please check with Academic Advisement if this is in your plans.

Use of the Page Facilities
The Page facilities are here for the use and enjoyment of all.  Their continued use and enjoyment is threatened when students bring food/drink into the areas (these are not locations designed for meals, snacks, or beverages), and when patrons do not “pick up after themselves.”  This past weekend Dr. Lesch was privileged to conduct a brief tour of the facilities with parents and prospective students attending the Saturday Student Expo.  The condition of the Page Lab was unacceptable.  Bringing food and drink into either the Lab or Breakout rooms is prohibited.  Leaving newspapers scattered throughout the room, chairs in disarray, etc., represent a failure to responsibly police the area upon conclusion of its use.

If these conditions recur/persist, rules for use of the Lab and Breakout areas will be revisited.  The Department was not well represented to these visitors as a result of the condition of the Lab, something we do not want to see repeated.  Please do your part to maintain our collective pride in the facilities we have so generously been provided.

AMA Chapter News

The American Marketing Association is planning a field trip to Winnipeg from Nov. 4th to 6th.  The website for the organization is http://business.und.edu/ama/, and it’s never too late to become a member.  Other speaker events include Ms. Heidi Murray, Marketing Director for “The Ralph,” scheduled for November 9th.

In Sum

Welcome back!  Take some time to do a little planning. Stop by and see any one of us if you have a question.
