Departmental Newsletter, Volume 3, Number 1

Greetings!                                                      August 21, 2006

Welcome back to campus!

We devote this issue of the Departmental Student Newsletter to brief announcements and news you can use to plan for the 2006-2007 Academic Year.

Important Faculty and Staff Announcements

Changes in our Faculty Roster

Many of you had the opportunity and pleasure to take Marketing 305 with Mr. Bård Stillerud.  Mr. Stillerud returned to his native Norway at the end of May following four years of contributions to our program.  We wish him well and will be staying in touch.

Dr. James Faircloth re-joined the Marketing Department in July.  Dr. Faircloth is no stranger to Grand Forks, having been a member of the Faculty throughout the late 1990’s.  Dr. Faircloth completed a very successful number of years at the University of Wyoming (he’ll miss those mountains), but was persuaded to return to UND following a series of interviews here on campus in late Spring.  He’s taught a variety of courses in Marketing, is highly regarded and well known in our academic circles, and is an able businessperson.  This year he will be teaching our Marketing 305 course and contributing in many other behind-the-scenes ways to our program.  Stop by and see him in Rm. 175E in the Marketing Suite, or contact him by telephone at 7-3748.  Welcome, Jim!

Dr. Sheila Hanson returns this fall to teach both Advertising 312 and Marketing Research 330.  Dr. Hanson continues her position as a Manager of Marketing Research at the EERC, and will be housed here in the Marketing Suite in Rm.118F (across from the breakout rooms).   The Department is grateful to have a person of Sheila’s caliber as an instructor.  Dr. Hanson was honored by the College of Business and Public Administration last Fall as the inaugural recipient of the Lecturer Teaching Award.

Mr. Terry Kemmer has been a recent and much appreciated Lecturer covering our Retailing course.  Mr. Kemmer was unable to return this fall owing to a range of personal and professional commitments at Mayville State University.  Our thanks to Terry for his high quality contributions to our Department this past year.

Dr. Susan Nelson continues as Director of the MBA and Sport Business Programs.  She will be on assignment from the Dean’s office for the near future in those capacities.  We wish her well in those activities.
Graduate Assistants

Departing Graduate Assistants included Ms. Sarah Henderson, Ms. Angela Boswell, and Mr. Sangtum Waingeh.  All have  successfully completed their MBA programs, and made many contributions to faculty projects and classroom activities.  We appreciate their hard work and wish them many successes in their future careers.

Mr. Haavard Paulsen (supporting Dr. Faircloth)  will be continuing in the Fall, and he is joined by Ms. Shannon Pearson (supporting Drs. Askim-Lovseth and Tangsrud) and Mr. Conrad Kwayu (supporting Drs. Bateman and Lesch).  We look forward to working with them.  Their office is directly across from the Marketing Breakout rooms.

Office Assistants

Ms. Nicole Schroeder returns to assist in day-to-day office administration.  Most of you have met “Nikki” during the past year.  She is completing an advanced degree in Health Sciences and we are lucky to have her back.  Welcome back, Nikki.

Continuing Faculty & Staff.    You’ll see many familiar faces as you return this week.  Drs. Askim-Lovseth, Bateman, Lesch, Tangsrud, and Stamp, along with Mr. Silvernagel, will be ready to work with you on your arrival.  Ms. Lisa Spencer, Departmental Administrative Secretary, will be able to address many of your questions and can help with most course scheduling issues should they occur.

Of course, we are also indebted to Ms. Marilyn Wocken (7-2975), Ms. Judy Jahnke (7-3010), and Ms. Linda Duckstad (7-2136) for their assistance to you in academic program development and advising.  If you are at all uncertain about your status in the major, or would like to explore opportunities for multiple majors, please give one of them a call to set up an appointment.  You’ll want to do so in time to ensure that you’re totally prepared for either Spring Registration (below), or December/May graduation.

Internships

If you’re interested in a Marketing internship or coop experience, please stop by and talk with Dr. Mary Askim-Lovseth, as soon as possible.  Practical experience not only looks good on a resume, but helps you improve your skill set.  Go for it!

Facilities Notes

The Department appreciates the improved care of facilities experienced in late Spring, including the Page Lab and Breakout rooms.  Regular card access to these facilities will continue this Fall unless/until a problem recurs.  Remember, no food or drink, and upon the completion of your use, please return the room to good condition for the next guests.

Program Initiatives

The Department is undertaking a number of program initiatives, several of which are likely to conclude this year.  These include curriculum revisions (some of which you have already experienced), improved sequencing of courses (to include the possibility of expanded summer offerings), enhanced (electronic) access to internship information, new departmental signage and program promotional literature, and more.  The next newsletter will outline the direction and scope of these activities.

In Sum
