News & Notes for Friends and Alumni
Fall, 2006 Volume 2, Number 1, September 26, 2006

Greetings!

Fall is in the air as we  prepare for the annual Homecoming festivities!

This issue of News and Notes begins by recognizing our recent Award-winning Students, covers special Accomplishments of Faculty and Staff, and recognizes both Service and Research outcomes of the past year.  We conclude by mentioning several special projects now underway.

Once again, this issue is intended to provide you a window into our Department’s accomplishments.  Much goes on “behind the scenes” that you would appreciate, but would otherwise never learn much about.  We’d like you to know.

Find something especially interesting?  Useful?  Feel free to drop us a line and we’ll do our best to be of service.

Outstanding Student Performance & the Annual Department Luncheon

The 2006 Marketing Awards Luncheon was held on April 21st at the Center for Innovation.  More than 35 persons attended and were treated to an opening speech by Mr.  John Handy, Enterprise Sales Manager, of Alerus Financial in Grand Forks.  John offered ten recommendations for career and personal development that were well received by all.

Finally, please note that the Department has been making a stronger effort to solicit student scholarship monies.  The cost of obtaining a high quality undergraduate degree continues to climb and the Department relies heavily on Friends and Alumni for financial assistance.  We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our donors and hope that all of you reading this report will consider assisting us as we educate the nation’s next generation of business leaders.  Please contact Dr. Lesch at the following address William.lesch@mail.busines.und.edu  if you’d like to talk about creating a scholarship in your name, or that of a friend or institution.   He’ll be eager to assist.

Thanks to Ms. Lisa Spencer and Mr. Bård Stillerud for organizing this function!

Staff and Faculty Accomplishments—Honors—2005-2006

Each year the College Executive Committee—comprised of the Dean, Associate Dean, and Chairs of the eight departments—solicits nominations for outstanding performance by faculty and staff.  This past year the Department (once again!) had two of its faculty recognized for collegiate excellence.

Dr. Sheila Hanson, Assistant Professor of Marketing, received the inaugural Lecturer Award for excellence in Teaching.  Congratulations, Sheila!

Dr. Mary Askim-Lovseth received one of two collegiate faculty awards for excellence in Service.  Thank you Mary, and congratulations for your service above and beyond the call!

Faculty Recognition of the Contributions of Mr. Bård Stillerud, Assistant Professor of Marketing, 2002-2006

Mr. Bård Stillerud completed his fourth and final year of service to the Department and was in preparation for returning to his native Norway.  Following a brief “roast and toast” of Mr. Stillerud at the Annual Awards Luncheon (above), he was presented a plaque by the Department in recognition of his many fine contributions.

Faculty Service and Outreach

Faculty of the Department are active in all facets of the profession and take very seriously their obligations to enrich the thinking and development of their communities.  Their “behind the scenes” activities contribute to the economic health and vitality of our region, impact the performance of local firms and institutions, and ensure that the University fulfills its mission of service to the larger society.  Here is a snapshot of a the more significant things the faculty have been at work on this past year.

Dr. Bob Tangsrud supervised experiential student projects in the Marketing Research course. These included studies on behalf of a consortium of North Dakota-based insurance companies, and the UND Athletics Department.  Bob also continued to work with the National Center for Agricultural Utilization and Research (NCAUR) in Peoria, Illinois, on behalf of the Northarvest Bean Growers Association, a client interested in new industrial uses for edible beans.

Mr. Bård Stillerud worked with students from in and around Oslo, Norway, associated with our collegiate exchange partner BI, of Oslo.  He was also the faculty advisor to the student chapter of the American Marketing Association.  Under Bård’s tutelage, the group has grown to nearly 70 members in just four short years.  The AMA performed local service projects, arranged for corporate site visits, and sponsored numerous speakers for the benefit of career development of its members.

Dr. Susan Nelson continued as Director of the MBA Program, and Sport Business program.

Dr. Connie Bateman led efforts on the CoBPA Hultberg Committee, a collegiate group responsible for bringing successful career-oriented women back to campus to share their thoughts and experiences as professionals.  Connie’s classes continue to be involved in client projects both locally and throughout the state.  Dr. Bateman was also recognized as a “Faculty Star” by one or more of UND’s Student Presidential Scholars.

Dr. Mary Askim-Lovseth devoted additional time to aid Northern Outfitters, a clothing manufacturer, in the testing and development of its cold-weather line.  She also worked with the Northarvest Bean Growers Association on reviewing consumer behavior toward beans and bean products, and has also gained insights into flax marketing, working with Golden Valley Flax of Park River, ND.  Mary is very visible on the campus and off, having recently earned (above) the prestigious CoBPA Service Award in recognition of both breadth and depth of her contributions.

Dr. Bill Lesch was involved in the restructuring of the several national trade groups representing edible bean interests.  With the assistance of a Departmental Graduate Assistant Mr. Sangtum Waingeh, he reviewed the Bylaws of ten unrelated commodity groups and made recommendations for merger and restructuring of the bean groups.  He continues as Chair of the Department and gratefully acknowledges the support and assistance of the whole of the Department in those tasks, particularly Ms. Lisa Spencer.

Dr. James Faircloth was successfully recruited to join the faculty following an extensive search that began in August of 2006.  Dr. Faircloth previously taught at UND in the mid-late 1990’s.  He returned to Grand Forks in the Summer of 2006, and has settled-in to his previous “haunts.”  Jim is expert in the area of brand management and the Department is not only lucky, but very pleased to report of his appointment as Associate Professor of Marketing commencing with the 2006-2007 academic year.

Does your firm or institution have a project or opportunity that could benefit from our expertise in Marketing?  Not sure?  Give us a call and let’s talk about the possibilities.  If it looks like your project isn’t “up our alley,” there is a good chance we can direct you to someone who can help.

Faculty Research

What we know and how we come to know it are as important to the field of Marketing as any other.  The faculty in Marketing regularly contribute to the knowledge base of the discipline, and in so doing, renew their intellectual capital.  If you have an interest in any of the areas of research involving UND Marketing Faculty, feel free to give a call and start a conversation.  We’re happy to hear from you.
