Marketing Scholarships
M. W. Kiesau Scholarship
The M.W. Kiesau Scholarship was established out of a desire to invest in the ongoing growth and development of UND and to provide a living memorial to M.W. “Bob” Kiesau. Bob was a leader in direct-to-consumer discount merchandising. He started five Home of Economy stores across North Dakota. Bob, who was a creative and innovative business leader, left an indelible mark on retail merchandising methods across the upper Midwest and his merchandising ideas were a forerunner of what is today accepted as a successful way of doing business. Colleagues and friends described Bob as honest, intelligent, forthright, and a master merchandiser.
The M.W. Kiesau scholarship is awarded to students majoring in marketing who have academic promise, positive attitude, and strong desire for success and leadership. Financial need is also considered with this scholarship.
E.E. “Mick” Simmons Scholarship
The E.E. “Mick” Simmons Scholarship was established as a living memorial to E.E. “Mick” Simmons. Mick, a Grand Forks native, received a degree in business and journalism from UND in 1938 and opened an advertising agency in Grand Forks in 1947. While in the advertising business, he was involved in much community service, serving actively on a number of boards for schools, a hospital, a library, and alumni. Mick often said “I never had a client I didn’t like,” perhaps one basis for his success. He considered each client a personal friend and did his best work for them, wanting his friends to succeed in business.
The recipient of this scholarship will be a junior or senior, majoring in Communications or Marketing. The student will be a well rounded person with a commitment to an advertising career, preferably active in at least two other campus activities. This is based on the belief that a person who is successful in the advertising world has diversified interests and is constantly learning from life’s experiences. An internship opportunity with SimmonsFlint is also provided with this scholarship.
High academic achievement and financial need will only be considered in relationship to the student’s basic potential and commitment. While a certain scholastic standard should be achieved, the personality and innate ability of the student will receive greater consideration.
Harry A. Gershman Memorial Scholarship
Harold Gershman, a graduate of UND, and Kathy Gershman established the Harry A. Gershman Memorial Scholarship in memory and honor of his father, Harry Gershman, a Grand Forks businessman who was very dedicated to the University of North Dakota. Harold (Hal) and Kathy Gershman wished to recognize the important role his father and other pioneer North Dakotans played in the building and development of their communities, their state, and nation. Harry Gershman, who passed away in 1977, established Happy Harry’s Bottle Shop and the Roadking Inn in Grand Forks. Harry Gershman believed in the private ownership of business and always had time to advise and learn from young men and women interested in business. His philosophy in retailing was that every customer was your best customer; it didn’t matter how they dressed, how they spoke, or how much they bought. Harry Gershman always had a smile and a joke, hence the nickname “Happy Harry.” He also had a great love for music and for many years was a member of the Grand Forks City Band as a saxophone player.
The Harry A. Gershman Memorial Scholarship is awarded to marketing students with preference for small business retail trade, good character, and above average grades.
Charles and Helen Whitlo Scholarship
The Charles and Helen Whitlo Scholarship was established by Charles Whitlo to provide scholarship assistance within the College of Business and Public Administration and in loving memory of his wife Helen.
The Charles and Helen Whitlo Scholarship is awarded to a student with outstanding record of achievement and strong interest in marketing. The student who receives the scholarship must have a minimum of 30 credit hours to complete. Potentially, a students needs can also be a factor in determining the recipient of the scholarship.
Don Anderson Scholarship
Former colleagues and students, family members, and friends of Dr. Donald G. Anderson desired to establish the Don Anderson Scholarship in his honor. Dr. Anderson served as a faculty member in the Marketing department for twenty-six years and received several honors and recognitions in that time. During his tenure at the University of North Dakota, he touched the lives of numerous students. Many had the privilege of having Dr. Anderson as an instructor or advisor. His mission as a teacher was clear and consistent: to offer quality challenges to his students, better preparing them for their many opportunities ahead.
The Don Anderson Scholarship is awarded to a student who demonstrates high academic achievement.
Willard E. Davenport Award
The Willard E. Davenport Award was established in honor of Willard E. Davenport. This award is presented to the most distinguished graduating senior on the basis of character, competence in the major field, extracurricular efforts to promote the student’s career in marketing, and, particularly, promise of achievement in practical application of its tenets. Receiving this award does not in any way jeopardize the recipient receiving any other scholarship.
Outstanding Seniors in Marketing
