CoPBA Student Lands Competitive Google Summer Internship
As finals week officially wraps up, Zane Hanson has had a busy week with finals, helping students move out of the residence halls, and preparing to move to California to start an internship at Google.
Originally from Bloomington, MN, Hanson came to UND to pursue a degree in Aviation, after assessing the financial investment in flying he switched to Mechanical Engineering, and later ended up transferring into Information Systems which he said is the perfect place for him involving computers and technology.
Beginning the day after Memorial Day, Hanson will join a team of 28 other IT interns in the newest Google Office in Sunnyville, CA. With a competitive hiring process of hundreds of interns, Hanson boasted how well UND prepared him to be competitive in the hiring process.
Hanson used the Pancratz Career Development Center to polish his resume and set-up a LinkedIn profile. “UND has helped me a lot and provided me with a broad perspective on business and how to give value to IT,” said Hanson. When looking for possible summer internships Hanson “googled” IT internships and found that Google was hiring summer IT interns which matched his experiences and qualifications.
After completing a screening process of his resume and two technical phone interviews Hanson was presented with an offer. At Google, Hanson will spend 50% of his time working on the google geek squad assisting employees with laptops, desktop support, and other electronic devices. He will spend the other 50% of this time with an assigned mentor where he will have the opportunity to be involved with new releases of innovative products and services at Google.
Hanson has been involved with numerous hands-on experiences with his previous summer internship at Best Buy, working at the IT Hub Desk at UND, and his current role at Northrup Grumman as a logistics coordinator.
Already looking to the future for more growth and leadership opportunities, Hanson is exploring the full-time IT Residency opportunities at Google as well as Professional Development programs within Northrup Grumman for after graduation in May 2019.
We are so proud of Hanson and how he demonstrates the amazing strength of our students and programs and how our students at UND are competitive around the globe!
