Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
The Nistler College of Business & Public Administration at the University of North Dakota proudly participates in the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, offering free, high-quality tax preparation services to individuals and families throughout the community.
About VITA
For more than 50 years, the VITA program has helped millions of Americans file accurate tax returns at no cost. At UND, the Nistler College extends this mission by combining community service with experiential learning. Students gain hands-on experience applying their accounting and tax knowledge in real-world settings, while clients benefit from personalized support in a welcoming and confidential environment.
Each return prepared through the VITA program undergoes a quality review to ensure accuracy, and every volunteer meets or exceeds IRS standards for training, ethics, and confidentiality.
Support
Our service is open to taxpayers who have gross income less than $69,000 in 2025 and required to file federal returns and North Dakota, Minnesota, or Montana state returns. We do prepare military, international, and foreign student returns. VITA does not handle any IRS letters but clients with such issues will be referred to the Nistler College Low Income Taxpayer Clinic.

VITA opens for the season on February 9th and continues through April 15.
You must have the following items for an appointment:
- Your photo ID (government issued)
- If filing jointly, the spouse must bring government issued photo ID
- Social security card for everyone included on the tax return
- All tax documents
