Experiential Learning
Supporting experiential learning through real-world engagement.
Experiential learning is a central component of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration’s educational mission. Through a combination of co-curricular events, applied coursework, and a dedicated endowment supporting experiential opportunities, the department provides students with meaningful, hands-on learning experiences that complement classroom instruction.
These initiatives enable students to engage directly with public institutions, policy processes, and community partners, strengthening their analytical skills and professional preparation. Collectively, events, coursework, and targeted financial support demonstrate the department’s sustained commitment to integrating experiential learning into political science and public administration education..
Internships
PSPA students frequently engage in internships as a component of their academic and professional development. These internships place students in local, state, and federal government agencies, political campaigns, and congressional offices. Through these experiences, students gain practical exposure to careers in law, public service, and nonprofit management. Internships may be completed for academic credit during the fall, spring, or summer terms.
Collaborating and Learning Globally
PSPA students participate in an annual discussion with students at the University of Manitoba as part of the J. W. Dafoe Political Studies Student Conference, hosted by University of Manitoba.
Study Abroad programs in dozens of countries in Europe, Asia, and Australia have been a critical part of a PSPA experience for many students. Students can select from programs where a group of students travel with a UND faculty member or where a student enrolls in an international university that partners with UND.
